Being first generation Pakistani American, I was taught how to pray by my parents. In the 1980s and early 1990s there were no Adaan clocks and certainly no interactive material to make Islamic education easier. Despite this, my parents did their best and any gaps in my Islamic education were later filled by Sunday school and reading.
My husband and I have been married for seven years and we have a three year old daughter. I have to admit, we are moderately religious Muslims who are working on getting closer to Allah. Considering this, one of the challenges we face is to give our daughter good Islamic education which always starts from the home. She has been following the movements of prayer and dua’a making by watching us since nearly two years. Now that she has turned three, we decided to become more proactive about teaching her religion and religious values. We started simple with recitations of Bismillah and the first Kalma and will be adding more Surahs and Kalmas, inshaAllah. Our latest implementation in her Islamic education is My Salah Mat.
Highlight:
My Salah Mat is a battery operated prayer mat that teaches Wudu, Adaan, Salah including surahs and Dua’as step by step in a fun and interactive way. It is the same size as a regular adult prayer mat, has 36 touch sensitive pre-recorded keys as well as seven different language options including English, Arabic and Urdu. It is waterproof and fire resistant which are both huge plus points.
Review:
While this prayer mat is ideal for ages 3 to 10, it is useful for older age groups as well. My daughter is three years old and likes experimenting with the different keys, commands and especially likes putting her feet on the foot prints, hands on the hand prints and nose in the center as the illustrations on the mat indicate. The illustrations alone are perfect for the three year old age group with such short attention spans. As children grow older, their attention span will increase and they will learn more features of the mat. I am very excited to see her learn from this mat continuously for years to come. Furthermore, my daughter’s nanny is non-Muslim and has found this prayer mat to be very helpful when teaching my daughter which is a huge plus point!
The prayer mat comes with an instruction manual for parents and an activity book for children. The activity book is for the older range of children, so I have not yet used it with my three year old.
Rating:
I highly recommend each household invest in My Salah Mat for their children. This will be an investment that will come in handy for years, inshaAllah.
