10 Life Lessons for my Daughter

The lessons we teach our children are ever ending. Till this day, till last night even…my mother was on the phone giving me life lessons. This first Monday in January, 2020 I am listing 10 life lessons I want to extend to my own daughter.

  1. You are you and can do anything! Do not let anyone tell you what your limits in the world are. YOU will set your own limits and achieve your goals. I know you will go places. The world is full of opportunities and you will surpass your potential.
  2. Respect. Give respect and expect it in return. There will be people who will give you utmost respect; do return it. In fact, take the first step in respecting others. However, there will be people that will disrespect you or make you feel devalued. Understand that you are not expected to turn the other cheek; this is a limit you will set for yourself. Disrespect can easily become a habit. Learn to walk away.
  3. Take care of your mind and body. The foundation for a good lifestyle starts at home and we are doing our best to give it to you. You are to continue this to make sure you take care of yourself in the best possible way. You only get one body, cherish it.
  4. You are much more than your looks. You are not just tall, short, slim, fat, dark skinned or light. You are beautiful because of who you are in your heart and mind. Do not ever let anyone judge you based on your appearance. If they do, move on. They are not for you.
  5. Have faith in God. Faith also comes on many levels and Allah loves you no matter what. Do what is right for you. Do not let anyone tell you that you are too religious or not religious enough. Your faith is your business, not anyone else’s.
  6. Learn the power of saying “NO” (read “fuck off”). Your actions, expression, you walking away may be enough but you just might need to say it to put emphasis on the fact that you will not take crap from anyone whether someone is disrespecting you, mistreating you, hurting you in any way or pitching a shitty idea to you.
  7. This too shall pass. You’re nearly four years old and Alhumdulillah haven’t faced life yet. Your existence is surrounded by happiness, positivity, love, cuddles, games and security. Life happens to everyone. There will be times you will feel down and even lose hope. Remember, each hurdle in life makes us stronger, more resilient. Each hurdle does pass.
  8. Treat yourself. You deserve it. Buy the shoes, the chocolate, the handbag; light the expensive candle instead of saving it. Take that vacation. This can all be done alone or with someone else if you choose to take along company.
  9. Know the value of a dollar. You come from two lineages of very hard working families. We have each worked very hard to be where we are today. While finances may come easier to you, learn they were hard earned and harder to maintain. Spend openly but save carefully.
  10. Don’t compare your journey with that of others’. You have come from an entirely different place, different route, and different dynamics. It wouldn’t be fair for you to compare yourself with anyone else because you cannot compare apples to oranges.
