Happy Pakistan Day!

This is Maya celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day when she was seven months old. Teaching children about their religion is necessary and I see many parents doing it. I however see a disconnect when it comes to teaching them about culture. Religion is certainly important; its a way of life. One may argue, culture is nearly as important. It further enhances ones identity and strong foundation which they can pass on to future generations.

Last weekend Maya and I spent time with some of her big kid friends. Since Pakistan Day was approaching, I took the opportunity and worked on holiday themed arts and crafts with the kids. I prepared a word search puzzle and printed coloring sheets. There was something for everyone, even little Maya. We colored, did word search puzzles and also made our own Pakistani flags which we bedazzled with green and silver glitter.

We discussed these interesting facts about the Pakistani flag:
-The green part of the flag represents the Muslim majority population of Pakistan.
-The white part represents the non-Muslim minority population consisting of Hindu, Sikh, Christian and other religions.
-The crescent moon and star are symbols of Islam.
-The star symbolizes light and knowledge.
-The crescent moon symbolizes progress.

Are you teaching children about your culture?
If so, how? If not, why?
